What leather, tools + hardware do you need?
What you'll need
The Bucket Bag is designed with beginners and budgets in mind, so it only needs the basics. The supplier guide (UK, Europe and the US) tells you exactly what to order, so nothing turns up too floppy or too board-stiff.
Leather
- Body: about 45 × 90 cm, 1.2–1.8 mm thick (3–4 oz). Thick but supple: a semi-soft to semi-stiff temper, or a medium handle if you're buying in the UK.
- Straps: about 15 × 130 cm, 2–3 mm thick (5–6 oz). Firmer: veg tan shoulder, semi-stiff to stiff.
Hardware
- 1 buckle (25 mm)
- 2 O-rings (30 mm)
- 10 rivets (Chicago screws or hammer-in)
Essential tools
- Round leather awl
- Craft knife or scalpel, with fresh blades
- Metal ruler (30 or 60 cm)
- Rotary punch
- Oblong hole punch
- Cutting mat
- Deadblow hammer, mallet or maul
Nice to have
- Punch board
- Circular hole punches
- Rivet setter
- Strap end punch
Cheaper tools are absolutely fine if you're just trying bag making for the first time. If you already own tools in different sizes, I'll show you how to adapt the strap widths.
Dimensions of finished bag
The finished bag measures 30cm (12”) wide by 25cm (10”) high by 25cm (10”) deep.
The strap is adjustable and measures 95cm (37”) at shortest/120cm (47”) at longest.

Do I need a sewing machine?
No. There's no stitching at all, by hand or by machine.
How long does it take?
About 8 to 10 hours, easily spread over a weekend.
How do I get the videos?
Once you've checked out, log in to your Leather Needle Thread account and the lessons will be there waiting for you.
Can I use my own leather?
Yes. Anything 1.2–1.8 mm thick works, and the supplier guide suggests where to find it.
