What tools do you need?
The modules go into the tools required in depth.
Essential tools
- round leather awl
- scalpel, craft knife or Stanley knife with fresh blades
- metal ruler - 30cm/ 12" or longer
- rotary punch tool or hand held punch tool in various sizes
- oblong hole punch (approx. 15mm by 3mm)
- cutting mat
- deadblow hammer, mallet or maul
Nice to have tools
- punch board
- strap cutter
- rivet setting tool - hand press or hand held
- strap end punch
What type of leather and how do you need?
Each bag style gives clear guidance on how much leather you'll need to buy.
As a rough guide, a shoulder of (cow) leather is enough for each style. That is approximately 12 to 15 square feet, or 1 to 1.4 square metres.
It is recommended that you use thick yet flexible vegetable tanned cow leather for the body of the bag (about 1.4mm to 1.8mm thick (or 3 to 4oz if you are in the US) and thicker and stiffer veg tan leather for the weaving straps (between 2mm and to 3.5mm thick (or 5 to 6oz if you're in the US.).
If you'd like to use thinner leather, there are tutorials on how to combine 2 layers of leather to get the required thickness. I want you to love your bag and you have got to love the leather!
