Over this 3 day course, you will learn how to make your own leather satchel. There will be a choice of designs to choose from as well as different coloured vegetable tanned leather. There is the opportunity to either learn how to stitch the satchel together by hand, (using traditional leatherwork techniques of punching holes in the leather with a pricking iron, before sewing up using specialist needle and thread in a saddle stitch), or by using an industrial cylinder arm sewing machine. This course is suitable for both men and women.
You will learn:
about different types of leather and appropriate uses
how to cut leather to a pattern with a scalpel
how to skive leather by hand or using an industrial skiving machine to prepare it for sewing
how to punch holes in the leather using a pricking iron
how to sew leather together using saddle stitch with 2 needles and fixing the leather to a stitching pony
how to fix straps and hardware such as buckles and rivets
how to finish the edges using edge dye and burnishers
how to emboss the leather with your name or initials to personalise it
